RIVERSIDE, Calif. - (Sept. 22) Seattle University claimed its second straight 1-0 victory, earning a thrilling overtime shutout at UC Riverside Thursday night.

Brie Hooks provided the golden goal in the 95th minute to snap the scoreless draw and propel the Redhawks (4-4-1) past the Highlanders (3-4-3).

“We are continuing to improve and play better soccer as a team,” said SU Head Coach Julie Woodward. “Our consistency in our work ethic and playing for 90 minutes has been much improved. Our back line also played very well tonight, limiting UCR to only one shot in the first half.”

SU dominated play in the first half, earning a 5-1 shot advantage, but were held off the board as UCR goalkeeper Alanna Guzman came up with three saves in the frame.

The defensive battle continued through the second half as UCR earned a slight 5-3 shot advantage. But again it was Seattle U making the better of the opportunities, putting all three shot attempts on frame and forcing Guzman to come up with big saves.

Four minutes and 13 seconds into the first golden goal, 10-minute overtime period, Hooks came through with the game-winner. Ayana Robles collected a loose ball on the left side of the area and sent a cross in to Hooks who scored over Guzman’s reach.

The goal was Hooks’ team-leading fifth of the season while Robles collects her second assist in as many games. In goal, Ashley Routh picked up her second straight shutout and fourth overall clean sheet of the year.

The Redhawks conclude their Southern California swing on Sunday, facing Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Calif., at noon.
