CHENEY, Wash. - (Sept. 19) Returners and newcomers both impressed as the Seattle University men’s tennis team opened fall action at the Eastern Washington Fall Classic Friday through Sunday.
“We had a very good first weekend overall,” said second year SU Head Coach Adam Reeb. “We’ve got a lot of new faces on the team and it was great to see them in action right away. We represented ourselves well in every draw and showed great perseverance in both Arshak and Miko winning the consolation bracket of their respective singles draws and Miko and Alex taking the consolation bracket of the doubles draw.”
In the top flight singles bracket, rookie Arshak Ghazaryan won his first match, 6-4, 6-3, before dropping his second match to move into the consolation bracket. He bounced back for a 6-2, 6-2 win over Kasper Parklow of Montana State University and went on to clinch the consolation final.
Also competing in the top flight singles bracket was another freshman, Trenton Nield, who advanced to semifinals with back-to-back wins, before falling to Gonzaga’s Ruadhon O’Sullivan, the overall second seed in the bracket.
“Trenton had a great tournament, reaching the semis of the top singles draw and almost beating one of Gonzaga’s top guys to reach the finals,” said Reeb. “It was an impressive college debut for him.”
In the black singles bracket, freshman Miko Pasimio dropped his first collegiate match, but came back around to claim the consolation final, beating Eastern Washington’s Rendell Burghart 6-3, 6-0.
In doubled play, Pasimio and classmate Alex Chan clinched the consolation bracket title with three straight victories.
“We had a slow start in our first couple of of doubles matches, but we finished the weekend nicely there and I’m confident we’ll continue to improve in that area” Reeb added. “There were a lot of positives to take from this weekend and we’re excited to get back to the practice court after a well deserved and needed day off.”
A select group of Redhawks will be back in action Oct. 13-17 at the ITA Regionals in Berkeley, Calif.
