SEATTLE - (Sept. 5) A penalty kick in the 55th minute was all that separated a very evenly contested women’s soccer match between Seattle University and Washington Monday night at Championship Field. The Huskies converted on an opportunity just under 10 minutes into the second half and held on for a 1-0 decision over the Redhawks.

Seattle U dropped to 2-2-1 on the season while the Huskies improved to 3-1-0 overall.

The balanced match featured 11 shots apiece, six fouls apiece and five total saves for the goalkeepers.

SU senior Brie Hooks had the first quality opportunity early in the first half, launching a rocket of a shot from the right side of the box towards the left upper corner. But UW goalkeeper Sarah Shimer came up with a big save on the attempt.

Following the scoreless first frame, SU came out solid in the second half as Karli White generated two early shot attempts that were both blocked by Husky defenders.

Then came the unlucky turn of events as UW’s Kimberly Keever was taken down in the box, granting the Huskies a penalty kick.

Despite SU goalkeeper Ashley Routh getting her fingertips on the shot, Shannon Simon would convert the PK for a 1-0 UW lead at the 54:25 mark.

Just inside 62 minutes, the Redhawks got a near miss off the head of Hope Fleckner as her flick towards the net went just high of the crossbar.

The Redhawks had two final shot attempts down the stretch, but could not convert, dropping their second one-goal decision of the season.

SU will be back in action on Championship Field Friday, hosting the University of Idaho at 7 p.m.
