SEATTLE - (Sept. 2) Matea Mamic had a career-high 30 kills and number of fresh faces in the Seattle U lineup stepped up as the Redhawks earned a thrilling 25-22, 25-27, 25-22, 19-25, 15-10 win over Idaho Friday night in the Connolly Complex.
SU improves to 3-2 with the five-set victory while Idaho drops to 3-2 overall.
Mamic led the charge throughout the match and fittingly recorded the final two kills of the night to give SU the win. Along with her career-high kills, the senior outside hitter added11 digs for her first double-double of the season.
Sophomore Mila Duarte added 15 kills while setter Shae Harris had a double-double of 60 assists and 11 digs. Iris Ivanis tallied a match-high 31 digs and freshman Kory White, in her first collegiate start, made 10 blocks.
“I’m really proud of how well we fought and didn’t get down when things didn’t go our way,” said Head Coach James Finley. “We got great leadership from Matea and Iris, and our young players were outstanding. This was a great team effort and the most fluid match we have had this year.”
The Redhawks never trailed in first set, though the Vandals kept things close and brought the score to a tie, 20-20, on a Kaela Straw kill. But Mamic answered with back-to-back kills and SU would hold on for a 25-22 win.
While still back and forth in the second set, momentum swung Idaho’s way in a 27-25 final, knotting the score at one set apiece.
Freshman Kahle Elliott came up big at the end of the third set, accounting for the final two points of the set for a 25-22 win and a 2-1 advantage. The rookie outside hitter finished the night with eight kills and six block assists.
Idaho forced a fifth set with a 25-19 win in the fourth. But the Redhawks had too much left, building a 5-2 lead early and cruising to a 15-10 deciding set victory.
Seattle U is back in the Connolly Complex on Sunday at 1 p.m., hosting Villanova on the final match of the SU/UW Tournament.
