BOISE, Idaho - (Aug. 28) A third straight 1-0 final score did not go Seattle U’s way Sunday afternoon in Boise, Idaho as women’s soccer ended the weekend of play with a setback to San Jose State.
The Redhawks dropped to 2-1-0 on the young season while the Spartans improved to 2-1-1.
In yet another defensive battle, SU found itself on the short end of a one-goal match as SJSU struck with the lone score in the 19th minute. Dorothy Hoppius took a pass from Maricruz Chapa and sent a 25-yard shot from the right side into the far left post.
Seattle U would finish with just four shots on the day as its offense struggled to find execution and rhythm.
“The first half we did not represent the way I would like for our program to compete,” said SU Head Coach Julie Woodward. “We improved in the second half, but San Jose State had a good game plan and executed well. This game gives us some things to work on for our weekend ahead.”
As it has been in all three matches thus far in 2016, the SU defense was solid as it allowed just its first goal of the season. Ashley Houth made four saves in goal while freshman Ayana Robles was a bright spot in the backline.
“Ayana was impressive all weekend, not just with her play but also her work ethic,” Woodward said.
The Redhawks return to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 2, facing Portland on the University of Washington campus as part of the Husky Nike Invitational. Kick off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
