AKRON, Ohio - (Aug. 28) Fourteenth-ranked Seattle U men’s soccer played toe-to-toe with second-ranked Akron Sunday night at FirstEnergy Stadium, before a Zips’ goal with two minutes remaining snapped the scoreless draw, resulting in a 1-0 Akron win.
The two top-15 teams settled into a very back-and-forth first half as SU created eight shot opportunities to the Zips’ seven. The Redhawks put five of those shots on frame, but Akron’s Ben Lundt came up with five big saves.
“I’m proud of the way the guys competed and we had good chances, but we didn’t put them away,” said SU Head Coach Pete Fewing. “You have to give akron credit. There is a reason they are No. 2 in the nation, and tonight they put away their chance.”
SU goalkeeper RJ Noll came up with four five saves in the second half as Akron erupted for 15 shots in the frame.
With time winding down and a likely look at overtime looming, the break finally came for the Zips. At the 87:49 mark, Adam Najem sent a cross into the box for Tyler Santa who slipped a shot left of Noll for the game-winner.
Kyle Bjornethun, Cameron Rohani and Alex Roland were named to the 11-member All-Tournament Team for their play in the weekend’s two games, including a 2-0 win against West Virginia on Friday.
The Redhawks continue their season-opening, five-game road swing on Sunday, Sept. 4 at Gonzaga. Kick-off in Spokane, Wash., is set for 2:30 p.m.
