CORVALLIS, Ore. - (Aug. 27) Matea Mamic and Maja Stojanovic were named to the Ultra Ankle Challenge All-Tournament Team as Seattle University concluded its opening weekend of play with a 3-0 sweep of Utah State and a 0-3 final against host Oregon State Saturday.
Mamic averaged 4.22 kpg to lead the Redhawks (2-1) while Stojanovic averaged 2.60 kpg and 1.30 bpg over the three matches.
The 25-22, 25-18, 26-24 win over the Aggies began the day of play in Corvallis, Ore. Mamic led all players with 14 kills while Katarina Marinkovic added nine kills and Stojanovic had eight. Four players had three or more blocks as SU held a 10-5 advantage for the match.
Seatlte U opened up a big 9-3 lead to open the first set. Utah State rallied to tie the score four times, including 21-21 late, but the Redhawks held them off late and a Mamic kill gave SU the 1-0 lead.
The Redhawks never trailed in the second set and pulled away late, turning a 15-15 tie into a 25-18 win. Clinging to life, the Aggies opened up a big 20-13 lead. Back-to-back service aces by Stojanovic capped a run that brought SU to within one, 21-20.
Utah State would stretch the lead back to three, 23-20, but a service error put the ball back in the Redhawks’ hands. Mamic made it 24-23 with a kill and served the final three SU points, including a service ace to end the set and the match.
“We had good team effort in the first two sets and were firing on most cylinders,” said SU Head Coach James Finley. “We struggled with intensity and focus in the third set, but Kerry Lane and Gabrielle Pehanick came in and gave us the spark we needed to earn he sweep.”
In the late match, the host Beavers held SU to a .187 hitting percentage while hitting .404 themselves. Three OSU players had double-digit kills while Mamic led SU with seven.
The Redhawks return for their home opener on Thursday, Sept. 1, hosting crosstown rival Washington in the Connolly Complex. First serve is set for 7 p.m. and will be preceded by a ribbon cutting ceremony at 5:30 p.m. signifying the renovation of the building.
