AUSTIN, Texas - (Aug. 19) The Seattle University women’s soccer team started the 2016 season off with a bang Friday night in Austin, defeating the Texas Longhorns, 1-0, at Mike A. Myers Stadium & Soccer Field.
Senior transfer Brie Hooks provided the heroics in the 17th minute, scoring on a right-footed shot from 15 yards out. Jennifer Plummer earned the assist on the game-winner after sending the ball in to Hooks.
With 7:32 left to go in the first half, play was suspended due to lighting in the Austin area. Following an hour delay, the teams returned to the pitch to complete the context.
Seattle U went into the halftime break holding the 1-0 advantage despite the Longhorns earning 9-5 shot advantage. The Redhawks’ defense would hold strong for the balance of the match to preserve the shutout.
Ashley Routh earned the shutout victory in goal for SU. Despite 17 total shots for Texas, the Redhawk defense kept the Longhorns’ shots off frame as Routh was forced to make just one save.
Seattle U continues its four-game, season-opening road swing at the Boise State Tournament on Friday, Aug. 26 and Sunday, Aug. 28. The Redhawks will face host Boise State on Friday at 4 p.m. PT and San Jose State on Sunday at 10 a.m. PT.
