“At SU, I learned not only how to excel in sports but how to serve the community and become a better person,” said Walter. “I’ve taken these teaching into my career as a tennis coach and in my everyday life.”
In the finals, Walter beat former top 500 player and member of the Columbia Davis Cup team, Eduardo Rincon. The three-and-a-half-hour three-set match was completed in 85 degree Southern heat and humidity, making the feat even more impressive.
Walter will compete in the 40s Hard Court championships in San Diego in December with hopes to make the Trabert Cup Team, the U.S. National 40s Team that will compete in the 2017 World Championships in Cape Town, South Africa.
A member of the Seattle University tennis team from 1995-98, he earned NAIA All-American honors in 1998 as well as a national ranking as high as No. 14 that season. He was undefeated at No. 1 singles during his entire senior year until Nationals and is now a member of the Seattle U Athletics Hall of Fame.
Now the Junior Tennis Director at the Mercer Island Country Club on Mercer Island, Wash., Walter runs a program that encompasses over 200 kids.
