What a way to start the weekend.
Mandie Maddux stunned as she started off the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships with incredible performance after incredible performance in the heptathlon events on Wednesday.
Maddux, who amazed everyone during the WAC Indoor Championships earlier this year en route to winning the pentathlon, came into the WAC Outdoor Championships in Lawrence, Kan. looking to do even more.
Always looking to do more. Always looking to exceed expectations.
Maddux finished in first place in the first heptathlon event of the day – the 100 meter hurdles – with a time of 15.36.
“It was huge for Mandie to get the lead after the first event,” assistant coach Chad Pharis said. “The placing beat our expectations.”
She followed up with another first place finish in the high jump, the second heptathlon event of the day, with a height of 1.63 meters (5’-4.25”).
Then, it was time for the third heptathlon event.
Time for another first place finish.
Maddux claimed first in the shot put with a throw of 11.24 meters (36’-10.5”).
And, because why not, Maddux finished the day by setting a personal record in the fourth and final event of the day – the 200 meter dash – with a time of 27.12.
“Winning the next two events (after the 100 meter hurdles), as well as widening her lead after the 200 was a great ending to the first day,” Pharis said.
After the first day, Maddux leads in the heptathlon with 2,879 points. The next closest in her competition is Mally McGarity from GCU with 2,736 points, with Tricia Cervantes from CSU Bakersfield close behind with 2,732 points.
“(Mandie) is focused and excited to carry this momentum into tomorrow,” Pharis said.
The heptathlon resumes on Thursday to finish out the multi-event. Maddux will compete in the long jump, javelin, and 800 meter run, in that order.
It promises to be an exciting finish for the Redhawk.
