Rancho Cordova, Calif. – Each Seattle U boat was able to race once over the weekend despite extremely windy conditions at the 2016 Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships.

“The novices dealt with really tough conditions but raced hard,” said head coach Jenny Park. “It is unfortunate the second half of the races had to be cancelled Saturday, but at least all crews were able to get one race in. The varsity has worked very hard the last few weeks, has gained a lot of speed, and had a great race. I’m proud of both our boats and we’re looking forward to racing closer to home next week.”

Seattle U finished third in their heat on Saturday morning, earning a spot in the Petite Finals, which were to happen later in the evening, but was ultimately cancelled due to high winds in the area.

The varsity 8+’s Saturday afternoon heat was also cancelled so Sunday’s race was switched to a Grand Final in which Seattle U finished fifth.

The Redhawks return home to the Emerald City for the Opening Day Regatta next Saturday, May 7, part of the annual Windermere Cup festivities on UW’s Montlake Cut. A boat parade will follow the earlier races signifying the start of boating season in Seattle. Spectators can view the day’s races at sea level all along the cut as well as on the Montlake Bridge, which will be closed to car traffic during the morning races.
