It may have been a windy day, but the Redhawks still found a way to fly.
Saturday, the Seattle University track and field team competed at the Spike Arlt Invitational in Ellensburg, Wash.
Many of the student-athletes showed their grit, grabbing Top-4 finishes at the meet.
“It was a very windy day, but the team did a great job of focusing on how to beat the wind, rather than let the wind beat them,” assistant coach Chad Pharis said.
In the women’s 3,000 meter steeplechase, Rebecca Lassere took first place with a time of 11:39.8.
Also taking a first place finish was Eli Boudouris, who ran the 3,000 for the first time this outdoor season, finishing with a time of 8:52.34.
Nathan McLaughlin finished closely behind him in the same event, taking fourth place in his first meet of the track and field season.
Nick Redlew competed in the triple jump, finishing in fourth place with a distance of 13.01 meters. He had gotten close to hitting his outdoor personal record in the long jump in just the event before.
Katie Fleming also competed in the triple jump, and took home third place with a jump of 11.05 meters.
In one of the many events she holds a school record in – the javelin – Mandie Maddux finished in third place with a throw of 37.12 meters.
Maddux also ran in the 4 x 100 meter relay alongside Abby Wachter, Madison Lichter, and Alyssa Gonzales. The women placed fourth with a time of 50.91.
With the completion of the Spike Arlt Invitational, the Redhawks are another week closer to the Western Athletic Conference Championships.
“It was a great tune-up meet for the final meet of the regular season for us next week,” Pharis said.
Next up, the Redhawks will divide and conquer, participating in two separate meets over the weekend of April 29-30 – OSU High Performance in Corvallis, Ore. and the Ken Shannon Invitational at the UW Track Facility in Seattle, Wash.
