“We fought all day and I am proud of that,” said head coach Geoff Hirai. “We played Redhawk softball and that is what we’ll take going forward.”
In game one, the ‘Runners scored first before Rose Saenz (San Gabriel, Calif.) tied the game on a Bakersfield throwing error, and the Redhawks would take the 2-1 lead on a Megan Ottino (Torrance, Calif.) home run in the fourth. CSUB tied the game once again in the fifth on a Julea Cavazos RBI single, and the game would remain tied, 2-2, at the end of regulation. Still tied going into the bottom of the ninth, Kaylynn Burt would score the two-out game-winner on an errant pitch.
Game two remained scoreless through five innings before Seattle U took a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly and a Bakersfield error. The Redhawks remained ahead going into the bottom of the seventh but the Roadrunners would score and take the lead, earning the walkoff win on back-to-back RBI singles from Alex Simmons and Sydney Raeber.
On the day, Ottino and Saenz led Seattle U at the plate (2-for-7, .286), each adding a double while Ottino hit a home run.
After the weekend, the Redhawks return home for the remainder of the season, hosting UMKC (Apr. 22-23) and Utah Valley (Apr. 29-30) for a pair of three-game WAC series to close the regular season. SU then plays host to the conference tournament from May 12-14, welcoming the five teams eligible for postseason to Logan Field.
