After winning all three doubles matches, Seattle University women’s tennis (9-11, 1-3 WAC) took a 3-1 lead halfway through singles before UTRGV (7-7, 3-2 WAC) made a late comeback to earn a 4-3 victory.

“It was a tough loss today,” said head coach Adam Reeb. “Our doubles was on point; we played very well and came out strong in doubles today. Michelle [Lui] and Kelli [Woodman] played great singles matches but unfortunately we could not find one more team point. I give credit to UTRGV as they battled and hung tough to pull out the win. Despite the loss, I was still pleased with the way we’re playing. We’re trying to take control and play to win and that’s all our coaching staff can ask. We’re right in there with the other teams in our conference and, if we stick to our game plan and keep working, we’ll be pleased with the results the rest of the season.”

The Redhawks won all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead before the Vaqueros tied the match with a win at No. 4 singles. SU would jump back ahead, 3-1, on singles wins by Kelli Woodman (Denver, Colo.), 6-2, 6-2, and Michelle Lui (Bellevue, Wash.), 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2 and No. 1 singles, respectively.

Seattle U leading, 3-1, UTRGV finished with three straight singles wins to clinch the 4-3 victory, with the final match going to three sets in the No. 3 spot.

SU closes the weekend as well as regular season conference play on Sunday, Apr. 3 at 7 am PT vs. NM State.
