“We started the weekend strong and ended strong,” said head coach Geoff Hirai. “We had each other’s back today and didn’t panic when things went bad. We are improving every week. Thank you to Redhawk nation for coming out through the rain and supporting our team this weekend.”
Boise State went up, 1-0, in the top of a second on a homer Corey Hendrickson crushed over the center field wall after the Redhawks left two on base to end the first inning.
Seattle U took the lead, 3-1, which would prove to be for good, in the bottom of the third as Kaylee Ree (Gresham, Ore.) scored on a fielder’s choice and Kayla Shuster (Escondido, Calif.) doubled down the left field line to bring two home.
Boise State scored with two outs to cut their deficit to one, 3-2, in the top of the fourth but the Redhawks tacked on another run in the bottom of the frame to take a two-run advantage into the final three innings.
The Broncos closed the gap once more in the fifth, scoring on a Teauna Hughes single to right center and tied the game, 4-all, in the top of the sixth on a Kora Wade single to left center.
Erika Rodgers (Glendora, Calif.), coming in to pinch run for Sara Dominguez (Santa Ynez, Calif.) who reached base on a double would score the game-winner in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out fielder’s choice.
Andie Larkins (Tucson, Ariz.) picked up the win in the circle, improving her record to 7-5, with a career-high-tying eight strikeouts for Seattle U. Boise State’s Nicole Wilson suffered the loss, pitching the final 3 1/3 innings in relief.
Seattle U returns to action at Logan Field on Wednesday, Mar. 9, hosting MSU Billings for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. Stay tuned to GoSeattleU.com as well as Facebook (Seattle U Athletics) and Twitter (@su_athletics) for all the latest schedule updates throughout the season.
