After helping the Seattle University women’s golf team to a fifth place finish at the Matador Invitational last week in Simi Valley, Calif., to open the spring season, junior Ellen Brantberg (Stockholm, Sweden) was named the Western Athletic Conference Female Golfer of the Week, announced Tuesday evening by the league office.
On a difficult course, especially in windy conditions, Brantberg followed her first-round 82 (+10) with a 76 (+4) in the second round, the best individual round by any Redhawk during the tournament. She shot 79 (+7) in the third round to finish in a tie for seventh place at 237 (+21), five strokes behind the co-leaders. Brantberg completed the tournament in a tie for second place with 30 pars, plus she was 10th among the field in par-four scoring (+14) and tied for 10th in par-five scoring (+3).
The top-10 finish was Brantberg’s best since she earned medalist honors at the Monterey Bay Invitational last March. She shot a three-round score of 228 at that tournament, the same score she posted to finish in a tie for 11th place at the 2015 Western Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Championships.
This is the second conference honor for the Redhawks this season, as Alexus Song was named WAC Female Golfer of the Month for September.
The Seattle University women’s golf team returns to action in two weeks with the Red Rocks Invitational, hosted by Northern Arizona in Sedona, Ariz., March 5-6.
