After finishing fifth at The Farms Collegiate last week, sophomore Joe Harvie (Orting, Wash.) has been named the Featured Student-Athlete of the Week on GoSeattleU.com.
After shooting 74 (+2) in the opening round, Harvie completed the second round at one-over-par 73 thanks to a birdie on the fourth hole (his 17th hole of the round). He then picked up his second eagle of the tournament on the par-five 18th hole to go along with three birdies against just one bogey for a final round score of 68 (-4). Harvie finished the tournament in fifth place with a three-round total of 215 (-1) as he tied for the tournament lead with the two eagles, plus he was tied for second among the 66-player field with 36 pars.
Harvie, the 2014-15 WAC Freshman of the Year, has now finished in the top five in three tournaments so far this season, finishing in a tie for fourth place at both the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate in Pullman, Wash., in late September and the Bill Cullum Invitational in Simi Valley, Calif., in mid-October. He is tied for fourth in the WAC with a scoring average of 72.5, which includes four rounds in the 60s and nine rounds under par.
“Joe continues to impress, he’s a very competitive individual and has a genuine love for the game,” Seattle U head men’s golf Marc Chandonnet said. “I have high hopes that he can become a great leader for our program.”
Harvie is majoring in accounting within the Albers School of Business and Economics and currently carries a 3.867 grade point average. He earned Academic All-WAC honors last year, and he played a major role in the Seattle U men’s golf team earning the highest combined GPA among all male sports teams within the WAC for the fall quarter/semester at 3.698.
The Seattle University men’s golf team will begin a stretch of three straight tournaments in the Pacific Northwest with the Bandon Dunes Championship March 6-8 in Bandon, Ore. That stretch concludes with the Redhawk Invitational April 4-5 at Chambers Bay Golf Club.
The Seattle University athletics department names a Featured Student-Athlete each Tuesday based on performances both in the classroom and in competition.
