Led by a top-10 performance from Ellen Brantberg (Stockholm, Sweden), the Seattle University women’s golf team moved up into fifth place Tuesday in the final standings at the Matador Invitational, hosted by Cal State Northridge at the Wood Ranch Golf Club.
On a difficult course, especially in windy conditions, Brantberg followed her first-round 82 (+10) with a 76 (+4) in the second round, the best individual round by any Redhawk during the tournament. She shot 79 (+7) in the third round to finish in a tie for seventh place at 237 (+21), five strokes behind the co-leaders. Brantberg completed the tournament in a tie for second place with 30 pars, plus she was 10th among the field in par-four scoring (+14) and tied for 10th in par-five scoring (+3).
Alexus Song (Auburn, Wash.) shot her best score in the second round at 78 (+6), and then she shot 85 (+13) in the final round to end up in a tie for 30th place at 249 (+33). Linette Chua (Singapore) completed her second round at 83 (+11), followed by a third round score of 84 (+12) to finish her first collegiate tournament in a tie for 37th place at 252 (+36).
Jamie Huo (Kent, Wash.) struggled in the second round with a 90 (+18), but rebounded with a third round score of 83 (+11) to finish in a tie for 43rd place at 253 (+37). Juhee Lee (Wilsonville, Ore.) continually improved as the tournament went along, shooting 82 (+10) in the second round and 79 (+7) in the final round for a 54-hole score of 263 (+47), finishing in 53rd place.
Seattle U combined for a second-round score of 319 (+31) to move up from seventh to fifth place heading into the final round, where it maintained its position thanks to a score of 325 (+37) for a final total of 977 (+113). Santa Clara went wire-to-wire for the victory, finishing nine strokes ahead of Morehead State thanks to a total of 945 (+81), while Anna Magnusson of Morehead State was awarded medalist honors after winning a playoff over USC’s Amy Lee, as each player shot 232 (+16) during the tournament.
The Seattle University women’s golf team returns to action in about a month with the Red Rocks Invitational, hosted by Northern Arizona in Sedona, Ariz., March 5-6.
