After the program’s best Division I finish and a run to the Sweet 16 last season, Seattle University men’s soccer adds two freshmen to their roster for the 2016 season in Julian Avila (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) and Noe Meza (Sunnyside, Wash.). Avila and Meza have signed National Letters of Intent (NLI’s) to attend school at Seattle U and compete for the Redhawks starting in 2016.

Julian Avila

Julian Avila, from Glenlawn Collegiate in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, is a two-time Club Player of the Year (2013, 2015), also named Manitoba Provincial Player of the Year in 2014. In 2014, he received Club National’s bronze medal and was a two-time Provincial Final Player of the Game (2014, 2015). The academic honors award winner competed in club play with Winnipeg South End United from 2009-15, leading the team to three (U14, U16, U18) MSA Provincial Championships. Individually with WSEU, he was a team captain for five consecutive years (2010-15) and was named 2012 Player Choice Team MVP, also competing with the U15 Canadian National Team.

Fewing on Avila: “Julian is a hardworking box-to-box midfielder. He is technically good on the ball with a wide range of passing and has the ability to combine through the midfield. He has a solid feel for the game and will fit in well with our midfield. Julian is competitive and has the work ethic to have a very successful career at Seattle U.”

Noe Meza

Noe Meza is a three-year varsity starter from Sunnyside High School in Sunnyside, Wash. where he led the Grizzles to district, region, and league championships as well as a third place finish in the WIAA 3A state tournament in 2014. In the top five percent of his class, he was also his team’s top goal scorer in 2014 and 2015 and named Team MVP for the 2015 season. Meza has scored 35 career goals, making 25 assists, and was named to the Big Nine Athletic Conference First Team for three years straight (2013, 2014, 2015). Outside of soccer, he plays the bass guitar, piano, and drums. In club competition, Meza has competed with Yakima United, Three Rivers Soccer Club, and Crossfire Academy, with which the team won the U.S. Club Soccer Regional Championship in 2015. He also was named “Man of the Match” in his debut game for Yakima United and was the top goal scorer for Three Rivers for three straight seasons (2013, 2014, 2015).

Fewing on Meza: “Noe is a player who caught our eye this past fall after he made the move to Crossfire Academy. He has good instincts in the final third and has the ability to beat players off the dribble. Noe also brings a great work ethic and a desire to improve his game. He is a great addition and we feel he will do great things on and off the field at Seattle U.”
