Seattle University women’s tennis completed fall competition at the Bulldog Invitational at Gonzaga University as several Redhawks earned singles victories and a Redhawk doubles pair advanced as far as the semifinals.

“We had a successful weekend wrapping up our fall season at the Bulldog Invitational at Gonzaga,” said head coach Adam Reeb. “We worked a lot on doubles since the ITA Regionals, and it was nice to see Michelle [Lui] and Kelli [Woodman] play well and make the semis in the doubles draw. They lost a heartbreaker in a tiebreaker in the semifinal match, but they played better as the weekend went on, which is what you want to see.”

In singles play, Madison Maloney (Idaho Falls, Idaho) and Kelli Woodman (Denver, Colo.) earned first round wins while Michelle Lui (Bellevue, Wash.) advanced as far as the quarterfinals and Kailyn Skjonsby (Grapeview, Wash.) advanced to the semifinals. Woodman also earned a victory in the blue flight consolation singles bracket.

“Michelle had some dominating wins in her singles draw the first couple of rounds and posted a solid result in making the quarterfinals,” Reeb continued. “Kailyn played the best tennis I’ve seen her play and had some terrific wins in her singles draw in getting to the semifinals. She played some really complete, solid matches and I couldn’t be happier for her. Kelli and a good singles win in her consolation draw and had some other really close three-set matches. We got a lot of tennis in and competed hard throughout the weekend.”

In doubles action, Woodman and Lui advanced to the semifinals with wins from teams from Portland State and Gonzaga.

“We had a very good fall season with a lot of positive results, and we also have a good idea of the areas we need to improve to have the type of spring season we are hoping for. We’re looking forward to working hard on our games to get ready for that.”

Seattle U finishes their fall competition season with this weekend’s matches and look forward to spring 2016, which they will open at Washington on Saturday, Jan. 9. The following day, the Redhawks will host Eastern Washington in their spring home opener.
