Seattle U defeated Utah Valley, 1-0, on Saturday, Oct. 31 to earn their third straight Western Athletic Conference regular season title. With the title comes a No. 1 seed in this week’s WAC tournament as well as a first round bye. The Redhawks now head to Bakersfield, Calif. to face the winner of No. 4 NM State/No. 5 CSU Bakersfield on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. The winner of each semifinal match will meet in the championship game on Sunday with the winner advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The Redhawks look to earn their third straight berth in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the Second Round last season.

The Redhawks have 12 shutouts this season, including five straight (Oct. 2-Oct. 16). The team outscored their opponents 17-0 during the 541 minutes and 35 seconds of the shutout streak. The Redhawks are also on a 15-game unbeaten streak, with their last loss coming at UW on Aug. 28. In the month of October, Seattle U outscored their opponents 26-2.
SMALLIDGE SETS WAC SEASON RECORDS
Brianna Smallidge was named WAC Defensive Player of the Week (Oct. 26-Nov. 1) for earning her 11th solo, 12th combined shutout of the season. With the victory, she set new WAC single season records for total shutouts and wins in league competition.

The Wolverines and Redhawks most recently battled for the WAC regular season title in a game Seattle U won, 1-0, on Oct. 31. UVU ended in a tie for second place with UMKC in league standings, their highest WAC finish since joining the league in 2013. Nationally, Utah Valley ranks 10th in total assists, 12th in total goals, and 13th in total points. Kasandra Anderson ranks second in the WAC in assists while Sheridan Fox ranks tied for fifth in goals. Jessica Duffin ranks second in the WAC with six shutouts.

Seattle U has defeated UMKC the past two seasons in the WAC tournament championship by a combined 8-0 margin (5-0 last year, 3-0 in 2013). The ‘Roos come into this weekend on a five-game winning streak, including four shutouts. Lexie Howard leads the team with 11 goals and 26 points while Kara Priest has a team-high seven assists. In goal, Nina Tzianos has started 12 of 19 games, allowing nine goals (0.76 save pct., 62 saves).

Last year, NM State defeated CSU Bakersfield in the quarterfinals before falling to the Redhawks in the semifinals. Two of the team’s top three scorers (Aileen Galicia leads with 12 pts, 5g, 2a) are freshmen. Rian Niles and Ashley Martin have combined for a 2.50 GAA.
