The Beaver Classic is more than just another meet.

For the Seattle University cross country team, the Beaver Classic served as the final decision on who would make up the team for next weekend’s Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championships. Friday, part of the team travelled to Corvallis, Ore. to race for the final two spots on both the men’s and women’s teams.

And everyone ran hard.

The men’s team finished in first place, with redshirt sophomore Joe Charbonneau leading the Redhawks and finishing second overall, with a time of 25:38.2. That time broke his personal career best by almost 30 seconds.

The second runner from Seattle University to cross the finish line in the men’s race and secure his spot was redshirt senior Collin Overbay, who finished 11th overall with a time of 26:04.7.

The women’s team finished tied for second, with senior Lindsay Frederick securing her spot on the Conference Championship team by becoming the first Redhawk to cross the finish line – 10th overall – with a time of 23:03.0.

The second Redhawk to finish the race and secure her spot was sophomore Johanna Erickson, who finished 12th with a time of 23:07.6.

After the Emerald City Open last weekend, five women’s spots and seven men’s spots for the WAC Championships had been filled. The times recorded at the Beaver Classic helped head coach Trisha Steidl fill those final spots.

The Seattle University cross country team will travel to Orem, Utah next Saturday, Oct. 31 to compete in the WAC Championships.
