Several of the nation’s best, including Sydney Leroux, Carli Lloyd, Abby Wambach, Alex Morgan, as well as the Seattle Reign’s Megan Rapinoe and Hope Solo are members of the U.S. WNT. Lloyd scored the late equalizer in the team’s match in Seattle on Wednesday night to lead the United States to a 1-1 draw after Brazil scored early in the first half.
After winning the FIFA Women’s World Cup in July, the team is currently on a 10-match victory tour in celebration of winning the title. The tour began in August with two matches vs. Costa Rica (Chattanooga, Tenn. and Pittsburgh, Pa.), a pair of September matches vs. Haiti (Birmingham, Ala. and Detroit, Mich.), and now a pair of matches vs. Brazil (Seattle and Orlando, Fla. (Oct. 25)). In December, the tour will conclude with two vs. Trinidad & Tobago (Honolulu, Hawaii and San Antonio, Texas) and back-to-back matches vs. China (Glendale, Ariz. and New Orleans, La.).
The WNT chose Championship Field as a training site due to the natural-grass playing surface, a rare and impressive location, especially considering Seattle’s consistent seasonal rainfall. In 2014, Championship Field was named “Field of the Year” in the collegiate soccer category by the Sports Turf Managers Association.
Championship Field has previously hosted several other international guests for training and clinics including Manchester United in July 2011, Santos Laguna of Liga MX in Mar. 2013, and Tottenham Hotspur in July 2014.
