“I continue to be impressed with our shutouts because we pride ourselves on our defense,” said head coach Julie Woodward. “I give a lot of credit to Bri [Smallidge] and our back line – we have our starting back four and Hannah [Carrothers] and Emily Zimmer come in and do a great job. I give credit to the whole team because we are putting pressure everywhere. I’m happy that we scored those three early goals and that we’re improving at the right part of the season. I’d like to see us be able to continue that intensity in the second half, but overall you have to be pleased with a 3-0 win.”
Karli White (North Bend, Wash.) scored her team-leading seventh goal of the game, the game-winner, in the sixth minute on a wide cross from Julia Moravec (Spokane, Wash.). Just over 15 minutes left before half, Rosalie Sittauer (Everett, Wash.) would score her first career goal off a long pass from Emily Zimmer (San Marcos, Calif.).
In the 44th minute, just a minute and 32 seconds before half, White took the ball up the left side of the field and made a long cross to Kiana Kraft (Kent, Wash.) in the middle, who netted a goal for insurance.
One of Bakersfield’s best chances to score came in the 83rd minute as Brianna Smallidge (Port Orchard, Wash.) punched Whitney Strong’s shot just over the net.
In goal, Tori Ornela recorded seven saves for the Roadrunners while Smallidge made two saves for the Redhawks.
SU outshot CSUB, 16-3, led by White with four shots, three on goal. Four different Redhawks recorded multiple shots.
The Redhawks close the weekend and the four-game homestand vs. Grand Canyon on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 12 noon. The Seattle U men’s soccer team will host San Jose State at 3 p.m. as part of the doubleheader.
