NATIONALLY RANKED REDHAWKS
Seattle U earns their first national ranking of 2015 with a No. 24 ranking in the Sept. 29, 2015 version of the NSCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Top 25. For the week of Sept. 28, the Redhawks also rank No. 14 in the Soccer America Top 25, No. 15 in the Top Drawer Soccer Top 25, and No. 16 in the College Soccer News Top 30.
In 2014, Seattle U earned the program’s first two Division I national rankings since reclassification in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Top 25. On Sept. 2, 2014 the Redhawks were ranked No. 22 and on Sept. 30, 2014 they were ranked No. 24.
2015 NCAA RPI RELEASED
In the first NCAA RPI rankings of 2015, the Redhawks debut at No. 16, the highest rated team in Washington, Oregon, and California. RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is used to rank teams based upon wins, losses, and strength of schedule, and is primarily used for seeding for the national postseason tournament.
BJORNETHUN NAMED NATIONAL POW
Junior defender Kyle Bjornethun was named National Division I Men’s Soccer Player of the Week by both the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and College Soccer News for scoring both goals in the final 1:36 in a win at No. 13 Oregon State on Sunday, Sept. 27. He was also named Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 21-27.

In the Sept. 29 version of the NSCAA NCAA Division I Men’s West Regional poll, five of 10 are members of the Western Athletic Conference. The Redhawks (3rd) are joined by Utah Valley (2nd), UNLV (5th), Incarnate Word (9th), and Bakersfield (10th). Utah Valley also ranks No. 25 in this week’s NSCAA National Poll.
SCOUTING UMKC (2-4-1)
UMKC comes into this weekend on a three-game losing skid after falling, most recently, to Tulsa, 3-2, in overtime on Monday, Sept. 21. After nearly two weeks off, the ‘Roos open conference play in Seattle before traveling to Utah Valley on Sunday. Kansas City’s two wins on the season have come at SIU-Edwardsville on Sept. 4 and Central Arkansas on Sept. 12. Pandelis Popgeorgeiev leads the team with three goals while, in goal, UMKC has played three different keepers this season.
SCOUTING AIR FORCE (3-4-0)
The Falcons won their most recent contest at Bradley, a 1-0 win on Sept. 27, snapping a four-game losing skid. Tucker Axhoj has a team-high three goals for Air Force while, in goal, John Wendt has played all seven complete contests, giving up nine goals and making 14 saves (1.22 GAA, .609 save pct.). The Redhawks are 2-1 vs. the Falcons in the past two seasons as league foes, SU, most notably, defeating Air Force, 2-0, in the WAC tournament semifinals en route to their first WAC tournament title in 2013.

Seattle U is one of just over 200 schools whose men’s and women’s soccer teams both received the 2014-15 NSCAA Team Academic Award. This is the second straight year both teams have received the award while it marks the fifth consecutive year for the women.

FEWING’S 250TH
Head coach Pete Fewing earned his 250th career win on Sunday, Sept. 20, a 2-1 come-from-behind victory vs. Dartmouth. David Olsen scored the game-winner late in the game to complete the Redhawk comeback.

Seattle U was picked to win the 2015 WAC title in the league’s coaches’ preseason vote. Kyle Bjornethun was named WAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year while Hamza Haddadi and Shane Haworth also joined Bjornethun on the Preseason All-Conference team.

Senior forward Hamza Haddadi scored four goals, three on PK’s all in the first half, in the Redhawks’ 6-0 season-opening win vs. UC Davis. His goal total tied the Western Athletic Conference record for individual goals in a match set by New Mexico’s Justin Sells in 1996.
