The Seattle University women’s golf team overcame a tough opening round Monday, needing 22 fewer strokes to complete the second round to move up into eighth place after the first day of the Cougar Cup, hosted by Washington State at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club.
Dorsey Addicks (Big Sky, Wash.) struggled in the morning round, shooting 81 (+9) during her first circuit of the course. However, a birdie on her final hole of the first round seemed to turn things around, as she collected three birdies against just two bogeys in the second round to shoot 71 (-1), moving up 23 positions into a tie for 29th place at 152 (+8).
Alexus Song’s (Auburn, Wash.) first round was going well until back-to-back double bogeys left her with a 77 (+5), the same score she shot in the second round despite an eagle on the par-four 15th hole as she finished the day in a tie for 38th place at 154 (+10). Jamie Huo (Kent, Wash.) also overcame a first round 81 (+9), shooting 73 (+1) in the second round to end the day at 154 (+10).
Freshman Yen Ting Wong (Singapore) also shot 81 (+9) in the first round and followed that with a 77 (+5) for a 36-hole total of 158 (+14), currently sitting in 52nd place. Juhee Lee (Wilsonville, Ore.) improved from a first round 85 (+13) to a second round 78 (+6) to move into a tie for 64th place at 163 (+19), the same score as Ellen Brantberg (Stockholm, Sweden) as she posted scores of 84 (+12) and 79 (+7), also making an eagle on the 15th hole during her second round.
As a team, Seattle University improved from a first round 320 (+32) to a second round 298 (+10), moving up from 11th place into eighth place with a two-round total of 618 (+42). Host Washington State holds a five-stroke lead over Fresno State after the first day, with the Cougars’ Cherokee Kim holding the individual lead at 138 (-6) by one stroke over Martina Edberg of Cal State Fullerton.
The third and final round of the WSU Cougar Cup is scheduled to take place Tuesday, Sept. 22, beginning at 8 a.m.
