Seattle University women’s soccer (5-2-0) earned their third shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory vs. Purdue (5-2-0) in Missoula, Mont., their first all-time victory over the Boilermakers after a tie in 2013 (2-2, Sept. 18, 2013).

“Today was a really great way to finish off the weekend,” said head coach Julie Woodward. “I was so extremely impressed with our overall team work ethic and effort today. Once again, the depth of our team is proving to be very valuable and we are getting big minutes from those coming off the bench. Our back four and Brianna [Smallidge] in goal were outstanding in getting the shutout. In addition, I thought Hope [Fleckner] had a really special game for us today.”

Summer Mason (Carlsbad, Calif.) took the first shot of the game two and a half minutes in before ultimately connecting for the game-winner in the 15th minute on an assist from Julia Moravec (Spokane, Wash.).

Leading 1-0 at half, Hannah Carrothers (Delta, B.C.) came in off the bench to score an insurance goal at the 49 minute mark, giving the Redhawks their final margin of victory, 2-0. Carrothers beat two defenders and slid the ball into the net by the left post off an assist from Karli White (North Bend, Wash.).

Mason and Purdue’s Hannah Leinert led all players on the field with four shots as the Boilermakers outshot the Redhawks, 14-6, but only led in shots on frame, 4-2. Purdue also led in corner kicks, 12-3.

In goal, Brianna Smallidge (Port Orchard, Wash.) made four saves in her 18th career shutout while Purdue’s Jordan Ginther allowed both goals in the complete game outing.

The Redhawks play a single game for the next two weekends (Sept. 20 at Idaho, Sept. 26 at Utah Valley) to finish non-conference play and enter Western Athletic Conference competition and will ultimately return home to Championship Field on Friday, Oct. 9 vs. UTRGV.
