“I give credit to Gonzaga – they came in, scored a great goal, and got a win,” said head coach Pete Fewing. “The disappointing part for me was that we led in shots but the quality wasn’t there. I want us to be the kind of team that can score six goals on Friday and four more on Sunday and keep up the momentum. That’s a learning curve and you need to be consistent. We weren’t sharp enough today and that starts with the head coach all the way down, so it was disappointing. We have a short turnaround this week and face two good teams next weekend.”
The Redhawks took three of the opening four shots, but none were on frame and would add five more off target in the final five minutes of the first half.
Gonzaga broke through in the 52nd minute as Jakob Granlund scored on a long through ball from Jake Kempf, Granlund beating out the Redhawk backline.
One of Seattle U’s best open chances was a header shot from Kyle Bjornethun (Snohomish, Wash.) off a corner kick with just under 15 minutes left in the contest.
In goal for Seattle U, Shane Haworth (Puyallup, Wash.) made three saves while Chris Lowrimore made four for the Bulldogs.
Granlund led Gonzaga with five shots, three on target, while Bjornethun and Jeff Rose (Carmichael, Calif.) led SU with three shots apiece, one each on frame.
Seattle U is next set to face Northwestern on Thursday, Sept. 3 and Cal Poly on Saturday, Sept. 5 at the Gonzaga Tournament in Spokane. The Redhawks return home to host Harvard on Friday, Sept. 18 and Dartmouth on Sunday, Sept. 20 before the annual crosstown rivalry game vs. Washington on Thursday, Sept. 24.
