Seattle University women’s soccer (0-1-0) allowed two goals off corner kicks within the first 10 minutes of play and, despite scoring late in the first half, would ultimately drop the season opener, 3-1, to Washington State (1-0-0).

Susie White took the 1-0 lead for WSU in the seventh minute off a corner kick by Kaitlyn Johnson. Less than three minutes later, in the 10th minute, Grace Hancock gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead on another corner kick from Johnson.

Tia Gavin would put Washington State up, 3-0, in the 39th minute with an unassisted goal following a saved shot.

Just over a minute later, in the 40th minute, Hunter Mar (Kent, Wash.) scored her first career goal off a corner kick by Karli White (North Bend, Wash.).

Neither team was able to add to their tally in the second half as WSU outshot SU, 4-2, in the second 45 minutes of action.

Overall, Washington State outshot Seattle U, 19-7.

In goal, Brianna Smallidge (Port Orchard, Wash.) made eight saves for the Redhawks while Ella Dederick made three saves for the Cougars.
