Glen Mattison, one of the best baseball players in the history of the Seattle University program and a member of the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame, passed away last Wednesday, Aug. 5, at the age of 74.
Mattison is the only Seattle University player to receive the David C. Tripp Most Valuable Player Award three times during his collegiate career, earning the honor in 1960, 1962, and 1963. In 1962, he also won the team’s batting title after compiling a .414 batting average for the season.
During his senior season, Mattison batted .339 with five home runs, picking up his third team MVP award. In his four years, the Seattle U baseball team finished with a 76-29 (.724) record, continuing a string of consecutive winning seasons for the program that reached 28 straight years.
After graduation, Mattison signed with the Houston Colt ‘45s and played for the Durham Bulls of the Carolina League in 1964. He also played for the Quincy Gems of the Midwest League, batting .269 with six home runs and 42 RBI in 69 games. That would be his only year of professional baseball, as he returned to the Seattle area and worked in the food brokerage industry.
The thoughts and prayers of the Seattle University athletics department go out to Mattison’s family. Mattison’s twin brother Gary, a 1968 graduate of Seattle University, informed the department about Glen’s passing.
