Seattle University once again is well represented on the Western Athletic Conference academic honor list, as 45 participants in spring sports, as well as an additional 45 first-year competitors at Seattle U throughout the 2014-15 academic year, received Academic All-WAC recognition, announced Wednesday morning by the conference office.
A total of 311 student-athletes were named to the spring list across the conference, as those players met the requirements of completing at least one academic year, having at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, and participating in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests. In addition, 400 freshmen and transfers who completed their initial year of residency were added as award winners, giving the conference a total of 711 student-athletes receiving the academic honor in the spring and 1,190 student-athletes earning the recognition throughout the 2014-15 academic year.
Among the honorees in the spring sports are WAC champions Sophie Curatilo and Elena Smith, First Team All-WAC performers Madison Davis, Mandie Maddux, and Collin Overbay, and Second Team All-WAC honorees Amanda Beyke, Tyler Flannery, Rebecca Lassere, Nathan McLaughlin, Bubba Morrow, Moira O’Connor Lenth, Louis Rodrigues, Patrick Sato, and Malaki Seanoa.
WAC Freshmen of the Year Joe Harvie (men’s golf) and Michelle Lui (women’s tennis) lead the 45 Redhawks who received Academic All-WAC status after completing their first year at the school. Ellen Brantberg, medalist at the Monterey Bay Invitational, also received the academic honor, as did multiple All-WAC performer Alisa Poplawski and Second Team All-WAC soccer player Stephanie Spiekerman.
The 90 honorees brings Seattle U’s total for 2014-15 to 166 Academic All-WAC awards, third in the conference behind Grand Canyon (221) and Utah Valley (194). The entire list of Seattle U spring Academic All-WAC award winners is below.
