8/11/15 Update: Woodman also finished as a finalist in the Women's Open and a champion in Mixed Doubles Open at the Babolat Boulder Open this summer.
Kelli Woodman, a member of the Seattle University tennis team, advanced to the title match of the 2015 Denver City Open over the weekend at the Denver Tennis Club.
Woodman, seeded fourth in the tournament, began her march to the championship match with straight set victories over Isabella Melena (6-0, 6-2) and Gloria Son (6-3, 7-6), the 2014 Denver Junior City Open champion.
In the semifinal this past Saturday, she faced top seed Meagan Monaghan, who just completed her sophomore season at Southern Illinois University. Woodman overcame early nerves and blistering heat, according to TheDenver Post, as she lost the first set, 6-1, before rallying to win the next two sets, 6-4 and 6-3, to take the match over her friend and former doubles partner.
Woodman moved on to the title match Sunday morning against former Colorado State player Lauren Strasburger, but the second-seeded Strasburger was able to win her third Denver City Open singles title with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Woodman. However, it was a good start to Woodman’s summer break, as she had just returned to Denver after completing her sophomore year at Seattle U.
Woodman also competed in the mixed doubles competition, teaming with Trent Broach and defeating Leta Hunt and Thomas Wallis in straight sets in the first round (6-1, 6-2) before losing to Strasburger and Jacob Spreyer in the quarterfinals in a hard-fought three-set contest (6-3, 5-7, 7-6).
During the 2014-15 collegiate tennis season, Woodman received Second Team All-WAC honors in both singles and doubles.
