Seattle University guard Jadon Cohee (Langley, B.C.) has been selected as one of 12 players to represent Canada at the U19 FIBA World Championships, taking place in Heraklion, Greece, June 27-July 5.
Cohee was selected from an initial group of 19 who were invited to try out for the national team last weekend at Humber College in Toronto. He will look to help Canada advance past the quarterfinals, where it has lost to the United States at both the 2009 and 2013 U19 FIBA World Championships.
Cohee appeared in all 34 games for Seattle University during the 2014-15 season, including six starts, as he averaged 5.7 points per game, plus he pulled down 56 rebounds and dished out 51 assists. He reached double figured in scoring nine times, with a season high of 16 points in the WAC Tournament championship game against New Mexico State March 14. He also collected 14 points and three assists at Minnesota Dec. 19.
Cohee will be coached by Roy Rana, head coach at Ryerson University in Toronto and in his fourth year leading Canada’s U18/U19 squad. Among Rana’s assistant coaches is Jamie McNeilly, an assistant coach at Virginia Tech. Cohee is one of four NCAA Division I players selected to the squad, along with forwards Dillon Brooks (Oregon), Christopher Egi (Harvard), and Drew Urquhart (Vermont).
The team will head to Europe to train for the tournament, including exhibition games in Bilbao, Spain, June 13-15 against Spain, Croatia, and Australia. Canada is in Group C along with Australia, Tunisia, and Italy, with games on June 27, 28, and 30. The bracket stage of the tournament begins Wednesday, July 1, narrowing the field to determine the champion Sunday, July 5. U19 FIBA World Championship games will be streamed live at www.youtube.com/FIBA.
