The Seattle University athletics department celebrated a successful 2014-15 season on Friday, May 29 with the annual Athletics Awards Show where several student-athletes and staff members took home awards for their contributions over the past year. Taking home the top honors, Stephanie Verdoia (Salt Lake City, Utah) of women’s soccer and Hamza Haddadi (Shoreline, Wash.) of men’s soccer earned the Eddie O’Brien Student-Athlete of the Year Awards. The award was renamed beginning in 2013-14 to honor the legendary former Seattle U athletics director Ed O’Brien, who passed away in February 2014.

Verdoia became the third Redhawk since 2000 to receive the Student-Athlete of the Year Award twice, joining Nichole Sauvageau (2001 & 2003) and Chris Coley (2005 & 2008) in that prestigious club. She adds this to the CoSIDA Academic All-American and Senior CLASS Award honors for NCAA Division I women’s soccer after leading the Redhawks to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with 22 goals and 13 assists for 57 total points. Even though she is currently playing for the Boston Breakers of the NWSL, she still completed requirements to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science with departmental honors, earning a 3.972 grade point average along the way.

Haddadi led the Redhawks with seven goals, including game-winning goals at Air Force and San Jose State, as the Seattle U men’s soccer team earned an 11-5-3 record and advanced to the semifinals of the WAC Tournament. In the classroom, Haddadi is a business management major within the Alberts School of Business and Economics with a 3.548 grade point average.

From Kelly Beck on Aug. 26 to Ted Hammond on May 26, 35 Seattle U student-athletes were recognized with the GoSeattleU.com Featured Student-Athlete of the Week award this year. The honor showcases accomplishments of selected Redhawks in competition, in the classroom, and in the community.
