After helping the Seattle University baseball team reach the championship game of the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament, junior righthanded pitcher Ted Hammond (Shoreline, Wash.) has been named the Featured Student-Athlete of the Week on GoSeattleU.com.
Last Friday night against Bakersfield, Hammond pitched the final three innings of Seattle U’s 9-3 victory for his third save of the season, allowing just two hits and one walk in three innings of work, with 31 strikes out of his 42 pitches. Sunday afternoon, he was called upon to start the championship game against the Roadrunners, giving up eight hits, two walks, and one unearned run in six innings, striking out six batters as 74 of his 118 pitches went for strikes.
Hammond finished the 2015 season with a 6-4 record, a team-low 2.63 earned run average, and three saves, tied for most on the squad this year. He made 22 appearances, including seven starts, striking out 47 batters in 61 2/3 innings of work. He allowed just one hit over four innings of relief against Northwestern March 13 with five strikeouts, plus he was the winning pitcher after five innings of relief in Seattle U’s 9-8 13-inning victory over Utah Valley and he collected both a win and a save during the Redhawks’ sweep of Sacramento State.
"Ted really stepped up for us this season and pitched some very meaningful innings down the stretch. He has been a solid student-athlete and shows that he can get it done in the classroom as well as on the diamond," Seattle U head baseball coach Donny Harrel said.
In the classroom, Hammond is majoring in business management within the Albers School of Business and Economics and currently carries a 3.299 grade point average. He received the Academic All-WAC award after the 2013 season.
The Seattle University baseball team completed the 2015 season with a 31-27 overall record, the most victories in a single season in program history. The Redhawks finished second in both the regular season standings and at the WAC Tournament, becoming the fourth Seattle U team to advance to a WAC Tournament title contest during the 2014-15 academic year.
Hammond will be the final Featured Student-Athlete of the Week named during the current academic year. The end-of-year awards, including the Eddie O’Brien Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Year awards, will be announced at the annual Athletic Awards Show this Friday, May 29, starting at 7 p.m. at Pigott Auditorium on campus.
