The Seattle University athletics department continues to be recognized for its commitment to the academic success of its student-athletes, as six Redhawk athletic squads received Public Recognition Awards from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for posting multi-year Academic Progress Rates (APR) in the top 10 percent of their respective sport.
For the fourth straight year, the women’s outdoor track and field team received a Public Recognition Award, the longest current streak among Seattle U squads. The women’s cross country team, women’s indoor track and field team, and women’s rowing team all received the academic honor from the NCAA for the first time.
The men’s indoor track and field team and men’s outdoor track and field team both earned a Public Recognition Award for the second consecutive year. The six teams recognized by the NCAA for their multi-year APR ending in 2013-14 are the most for Seattle University since the school reclassified to the Division I level.
Seattle U was the only Western Athletic Conference school with more than one squad earning an APR Public Recognition Award, as New Mexico State, Texas-Pan American, and Utah Valley picked up one award apiece.
According to the NCAA, the APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or quarter and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in each sport. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from 2010-11, 2011-2012, 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years.
