Bill Hogan, Seattle University Director of Athletics, announced today that the contract of head softball coach Dan Powers will not be renewed, ending Powers’s tenure as head of the Redhawk program.

“We are very appreciative of Dan’s work over the past 12 years, as he guided the Redhawk softball team through the transition from Division II to Division I,” said Hogan. “However, we feel that it is time for the softball program to make a change as we strive towards our goals of WAC titles and NCAA Tournament berths.”

Powers served as Seattle U’s head softball coach from 2004 through 2015, compiling an overall record of 281-311-1 (.475). While Seattle U was a member of the Great Northwest Conference, Powers led the Redhawks to four berths in the NCAA Division II Softball Tournament over the span of five years, advancing all the way to the regional final in 2007 and winning the conference title in 2008.

Once Seattle U began the transition to Division I status, the softball team won the Independent Tournament in 2009, but never finished with a winning record. The Redhawks won one game in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament in each of the past two seasons, but were eliminated before reaching the final day each time.

Hogan also announced that head men’s and women’s tennis coach Mark Frisby will not return. Frisby was hired as head men’s and women’s tennis coach in January 2008 after the programs were added as varsity sports. He built both teams from scratch and helped the women’s tennis team join the Great West Conference as an affiliate member before both squads became members of the Western Athletic Conference.
