The Seattle University women’s golf team put itself in contention after Monday’s first round of the 2015 Western Athletic Conference Golf Championships, placing itself in second place after 18 holes on the Heritage Course of the Wigwam Golf Resort.
After a steady front nine with eight pars and just one bogey, Alexus Song (Auburn, Wash.) posted birdies on the 11th, 13th, and 15th holes to finish the day at two-under-par 70, currently at the top of the leaderboard by one stroke over Viviana Macias of New Mexico State.
Amanda Beyke (Federal Way, Wash.) overcame a double bogey on the first hole with birdies on the third and fifth holes, and then she recovered from a bogey-bogey-double bogey stretch with a birdie on the 17th hole to end the day in a tie for sixth place at two-over-par 74. Dorsey Addicks (Big Sky, Mont.) collected 14 pars during her opening round as she shot four-over-par 76, placing her in a tie for 11th place.
Ellen Brantberg (Stockholm, Sweden) shot even par on the front nine, but then struggled coming down the stretch, posting a first round score of 78 (+6) to end the day in a tie for 15th place. Jamie Huo (Kent, Wash.) also had issues on the opening day, shooting 79 (+7) to end up in a tie for 19th place.
As a team, Seattle U combined for an opening round score of 298 (+10), six strokes behind current leader New Mexico State and nine strokes in front of third place Missouri-Kansas City. The team score of 298 is tied for the second-best round the Redhawks have shot this season, behind only the second-round 297 posted at the Rose City Collegiate Sept. 29 and matching the 298 shot by the team just 13 days ago in the final round of the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic.
The second round of the 2015 WAC Women’s Golf Championships will begin Tuesday, April 21, at 7 a.m. The Seattle University golfers will be in the final five groups, with tee times starting at 8:30 a.m. and continuing until 9:10 a.m.
