Ross Named All-Conference, Allen Named to All-Newcomer Team

The Redhawks face Utah Valley on Wednesday in the first round of the WAC Tournament.

The Western Athletic Conference has announced the 2014-15 WAC women’s basketball All-Conference teams after a vote of the league’s eight head coaches. Taelor Ross (Vancouver, Wash.) represents the Redhawks, receiving Second Team All-WAC honors while Crystal Allen (Fort Worth, Texas) was named to the All-Newcomer team.

Ross led Seattle University in both scoring and rebounding through the regular season, averaging 11.6 points per game and 6.8 rebounds per game. She set a new career high in scoring as a junior with 21 points on Dec. 4, 2014 vs. Washington and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds at Grand Canyon on Feb. 5. She also set new single-game career highs in assists (4), steals (4), and blocks (6) during 2014-15 and leads the league in blocked shots. Earlier this season, she was named Preseason Second Team All-WAC by College Sports Madness.

Allen is shooting 82.2 percent from the free-throw line during her freshman campaign, good for second in the WAC through the regular season. Earlier this season, Allen was named WAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week by both the conference office and College Sports Madness after recording a career-high 21 points and eight rebounds in a win over Utah Valley. She also set a new career mark at the line on Dec. 21, 2014 vs. Idaho State, shooting 11-for-13.

The Redhawks earned the No. 4 seed in this week’s WAC Tournament in Las Vegas and will face No. 5 Utah Valley in the first round on Wednesday, Mar. 11 at 2 p.m. PT. The winner will advance to the semifinals to face No. 1 New Mexico State at noon on Friday, Mar. 13, with the championship game to be broadcast on ESPNU on Saturday, Mar. 14 at 1 p.m. PT.

New Mexico State’s Brianna Freeman was named Player of the Year while Utah Valley’s Mariah Seals was named Freshman of the Year. NMSU’s Mark Trakh picked up Coach of the Year honors, leading the Aggies to the 2014-15 WAC Regular Season title.

Freeman, Tyonna Outland (Bakersfield), Sasha Weber (NM State), Shanice Davis (NM State), and Shawnte’ Goff (UTPA) were named to the First Team while Batabe Zempare (Bakersfield), Rhaiah Spooner-Knight (Utah Valley), Brittany Bush (UTPA), and Alyssa Shannon (Bakersfield) joined Ross on the Second Team.

The All-Defensive Team included Moriah Mack (NM State), Courtney Hayes (Grand Canyon), Tonisha Walker (UTPA), Shannon, and Outland while Davis, Seals, Aries Washington (UMKC), and Hildur Bjorg Kjartansdottir (UTPA) joined Allen on the All-Newcomer Team.
