Thanks to another solid round of golf, Seattle University climbed two more spots in the team standings, finishing the Sacramento State Intercollegiate in third place Tuesday at the Valley Hi Country Club.
Joe Harvie (Orting, Wash.) started slowly in his final round, but three birdies on the back nine enabled him to shoot 73 (+1) and remain in a tie for 10th place at the end of the tournament with a 54-hole score of 219 (+3). He finished in a tie for sixth place among the 100-player field with 38 pars over the two-day tournament.
Patrick Sato (Bellevue, Wash.) got off to a strong start with back-to-back birdies on the third and fourth holes, and then another birdie on the 15th hole helped him post a third round score of 72 (even), moving up into a tie for 22nd place at 222 (+6). Ross Kukula (Ocean Park, Wash.) finished one stroke behind Sato in a tie for 26th place at 223 (+7) after shooting 70 (-2) thanks to three birdies against just one bogey in the final round.
Kyle Cornett (Mill Creek, Wash.) used two front-nine birdies to post a third-round score of 74 (+2), moving up into a tie for 28th place at 224 (+8). Shane Wathanasaynee (Los Alamitos, Calif.) struggled in his final round, needing a birdie on the 18th and last hole to salvage a 79 (+7) to finish the tournament in a tie for 49th place at 228 (+12).
As a team, Seattle U combined for a third round score of 289 (+1), moving up two spots into third place in the final team standings with a three-round total of 882 (+18). Host school Sacramento State used an eight-under-par 280 to cruise to the team title by 13 strokes over Pacific, with the Hornets’ Luke Kristo shooting six-under-par 66 to come from behind to earn medalist honors at 208 (-8) by two strokes.
The Seattle University men’s golf team heads to Goodyear, Ariz., for the Desert Shootout at the Palm Valley Country Club March 19-21. The squad will then host the Redhawk Invitational at Chambers Bay Golf Club, home of the 2015 United States Open Championships, April 6-7.
