Seattle University senior guards Isiah Umipig (Federal Way, Wash.) and Jarell Flora (Bremerton, Wash.) have earned recognition from the coaches of the Western Athletic Conference, as Umipig was voted First Team All-WAC and Flora received Second Team All-WAC recognition, announced Tuesday morning by the conference office.
Heading into the WAC Tournament, Umipig and Flora are Seattle U’s top two scorers, averaging 16.7 points and 14.2 points per game, respectively. In WAC play, Umipig averaged 15.6 points per game, second in the league, while Flora finished fourth in the WAC at 14.2 points per game.
Umipig became the 36th player in Seattle U men’s basketball history to score at least 1,000 points at the school, plus he is the 13th player in program history to collect 1,000 points over the span of two straight seasons, joining SU legends such as Johnny O’Brien, Elgin Baylor, Eddie Miles, Tom Workman, and Frank Oleynick.
After setting a Seattle U single season record with 106 made three-pointers last season, Umipig is close to that mark this year, making 102 three-pointers through the regular season. He is third in Division I with 3.64 made three-pointers per game, plus he is in the WAC top 10 in scoring, assists (2.89 apg), steals (1.18 spg), three-point field goal percentage (.430), and free throw percentage (.788).
Along with a career-high 398 points so far this season, Flora is third on the team in rebounding, averaging 4.6 rebounds per game. He has made 68 three-pointers in 2014-15, just outside the Seattle U single-season top 10 list, and his 162 made three-pointers over his career puts him fifth in program history. Flora reached double figures in scoring 17 times this season, including a 26-point, 10-rebound effort in Seattle U’s 66-47 win over Sacramento State on Dec. 21.
Umipig is joined on the All-WAC First Team by WAC Player of the Year Martez Harrison of UMKC, WAC Freshman of the Year Pascal Siakam of New Mexico State, Aly Ahmed of Bakersfield, and Daniel Mullings of New Mexico State. Remi Barry and Tshilidzi Nephawe of New Mexico State received Second Team All-WAC honors along with Flora, Janari Joesaar of Texas-Pan American, and DeWayne Russell of Grand Canyon. Marvin Menzies of WAC regular season champion New Mexico State was named the recipient of the WAC Don Haskins Coach of the Year Award.
Seattle University is the third seed in this week’s WAC Men’s Basketball Tournament and will face sixth seed Chicago State Thursday, March 12, at 7 p.m. at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. The game will be streamed online by the WAC Digital Network (www.wacsports.com/watch), plus it will be broadcast on 770 AM KTTH with Dave Grosby and Gary Hill Jr.
