Mandie Maddux (Gresham, Ore.) got the 2015 Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships off to a great start for Seattle University, earning First Team All-WAC honors by finishing second in the indoor pentathlon with a school-record point total Thursday at the Cadet Field House on the campus of the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Maddux started the meet with a personal best time of 9.72 seconds in the 60 meter hurdles, finishing third in her heat and 11th overall among the pentathlon competitors. She then cleared 1.62 meters (5’ 3.75”) in the high jump, second-best among the participants, to move up into second place in the overall standings after two events.
Maddux posted the best mark among the competitors in the shot put, earning a mark of 10.84 meters (35’ 6.75”) on her final throw to close to within four points of the lead after three events. She then earned a personal-best mark in the long jump at 4.85 meters (15’ 11”) to remain in second place entering the final event of the day.
In the 800 meter run, Maddux posted a time of 2:32.75 to maintain her second-place position in the final standings, compiling a total of 3,287 points, 12 points more than the previous school record set by Kaytie Bateman at the 2013 WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. Maddux finished just 45 points behind conference champion Mindy Stapel of Utah Valley and 37 points ahead of Ashli Schulz, also from Utah Valley.
Thanks to Maddux’s performance, the Seattle U women currently sit in second place in the team standings with eight points, behind Utah Valley, who placed four competitors within the top eight of the pentathlon to earn 23 points.
The WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships kick into full gear Friday, Feb. 27, with preliminaries in six track events and finals in two track events and three field events for each gender. The link to live results is available from the track and field schedule page of GoSeattleU.com.
