Seattle U Heads to UNLV for Second Weekend of Season: After opening the season in Arizona at the Kajikawa Classic last weekend, Seattle University softball travels to UNLV for the Wilson-Demarini Desert Classic. This weekend, the Redhawks will face a repeat foe from last weekend in New Mexico as well as four new opponents on the season - Boise State, Nevada-Reno, Utah, and Hawaii. Over the month of February, starting with last weekend, the Redhawks travel south for four straight weekends before returning to Seattle for UW’s Spring Classic (Mar. 6-8). SU hosts their first home games vs. Notre Dame de Namur (Mar. 11) and Texas Tech (Mar. 18) in mid-March. Seattle U will open their third WAC season in Phoenix on the home field of the 2014 Regular Season Champions, Grand Canyon, on Mar. 27-28.

Shuster-Gonzales Named GoSeattleU.com Featured Student-Athlete (Feb. 2-8): Kayla Shuster-Gonzales was named Featured Student-Athlete for recording a pair of home runs, driving in a team high RBI, with a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in the team’s win vs. Bradley on Feb. 7. In 2014, she was also named Academic All-WAC and to the NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete team.

Bubba Morrow Nearing Seattle U Career Doubles Record: Morrow moved up to fourth on Seattle U’s all-time career records list for doubles (29 as of 2/11) this past weekend and is three away from tying Allegra Wilde’s top spot (32).

Scouting Nevada-Reno (1-4): Nevada, like Seattle U and New Mexico, participated in last weekend’s Kajikawa Classic, going 1-4 with an opening day win over Fordham and a quartet of losses to follow versus formidable opponents (Portland State, North Carolina, Oregon State, and Oregon). Through the first weekend of play, Alyssa Mendez led the Wolf Pack at the plate (.400) with two runs on four hits, a double, a home run, and two RBI. McKenna Isenberg led the team in the circle with a 4.20 ERA in three appearances as batters averaged a .250 against her.

Scouting Utah (2-3): Utah opened at the So-Cal Collegiate Classic split between Westwood and Long Beach, going 2-3 and closing the weekend with a pair of wins over Idaho State and Long Beach State. Among those with more than one at bat last weekend, Kate Dickman led the team at the plate with a .500 avg with seven hits including two doubles, one triple, and three RBI. In the circle, Kayce Nieto and Mariah Ramirez allowed no runs in one appearance apiece while Katie Donovan recorded a 1.19 ERA, 1-1 record, and nine strikeouts in two complete games and four appearances.

Scouting Boise State (3-2): The Broncos opened the season with wins over Texas Southern (twice) and North Texas at last weekend’s North Texas Tournament in Denton. Devon Bridges hit a team-high .500 at the plate including four runs on nine hits as well as two doubles, one home run, and four RBI. In the circle, Sarah Barnes led with a 3.00 ERA, 1-1 record, and six strikeouts in three appearances and two starts.

Scouting New Mexico (3-2): The Redhawks’ first repeat opponent of 2015, the Lobos won their season-opening meeting, 4-3, on Feb. 6 at the Kajikawa Classic. New Mexico would go on to close the weekend with back-to-back wins vs. San Diego and UC Santa Barbara after falling to BYU and CSUN. Lauren Soles was named Mountain West Pitcher of the Week after earning a 2-0 record and a 0.00 ERA last weekend.

Scouting Hawai’i (3-2): Last weekend at the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic, Hawai’i defeated St. Mary’s twice as well as No. 25 DePaul, falling twice to No.4 Oklahoma. Leisha Li’ill’i (.333) recorded a double, two walks, and two RBI to lead the team at the plate. In the circle, Kanani ‘Aina Cabrales went 2-0 with a pair of complete game shutouts over St. Mary’s and DePaul. Last time out, UH won a close contest at the UNLV tournament, 9-8, on Feb. 14, 2014.
