Home Sweet Home: With a record-high 20 home games this season, SU is already through 17 games of their 2014-15 home schedule, completing 10 of 20 (including exhibitions) prior to the Christmas holiday. At the beginning of January, the Redhawks finished a stretch in which they played 11 of 12 on their home court (Nov. 29-Jan. 10). After playing seven of eight home games during the month of December and six of eight in January, the Redhawks will play on their home floor just twice in February.
Scouting New Mexico State (15-6, 8-0 WAC): The Aggies bring an 11-game winning streak into this weekend’s contests, the third longest winning streak in team history (longest since 1987-88 season). Sasha Weber, who was named College Sports Madness Women’s Basketball Player of the Week this past week, is leading the team in scoring with 14.3 ppg. Shanice Davis (13.2 ppg) and the team’s rebounding leader Brianna Freeman (12.4 ppg, 7.0 rpg) are also averaging in double figures. The Redhawks are 4-2 vs. the Aggies in conference play over the past three seasons but NMSU has won the last two meetings (Feb. 8, 2014, 86-61, and earlier this season, 76-66, on Jan. 17, 2015, both in Las Cruces). SU has won each meeting in Seattle as well as ending the Aggies’ season in the 2013 WAC Tournament.
Scouting UTPA (13-10, 6-2 WAC): The Broncs, at 13-10 going into this weekend, are on their best 23-game start in program history and are one win away from tying the program’s all-time season wins record. Shawnte’ Goff leads the team in scoring (15.4 ppg, 13.8 ppg in WAC play) followed by Brittany Bush (9.0 ppg, 6.4 rpg), the team leader on the glass. Seattle U won both meetings vs. UTPA last season (84-62 in Seattle on Jan. 11 and 75-68 in OT in Edinburg on Feb. 6), but earlier this season, the Broncs won, 80-58, on Jan. 15 in Edinburg.
Record Breaking Performances: Taelor Ross recorded a double-double and a career-high 14 rebounds in the win at Grand Canyon on Feb. 5. Ross also tied her career high with three blocks in a pair of games at GCU (Feb. 5) and Utah Valley (Feb. 7) on the weekend.
