Sophomore Jamie Huo (Kent, Wash.) posted the only sub-70 round of the entire day by any player, shooting three-under-par 69 in the second round to move into a tie for the individual lead Monday at the Matador Invitational, hosted by CSUN at the Wood Ranch Golf Club.
Huo opened play with a first round score of 78 (+6), but improved by nine strokes to move into a tie for the lead with USC’s Kimberly Santiago at three-over-par 147. Huo is third among the 48-player field in par-five scoring (-2), tied for fifth in both birdies (five) and pars (24), and tied for sixth in par-three scoring (even) and par-four scoring (+5).
Amanda Beyke (Federal Way, Wash.) improved from a first-round score of 80 (+8) to a second-round total of 78 (+6) to end up in a tie for 22nd place at 158 (+14). Monica Keo (Kaneohe, Hawaii) also showed improvement from the morning to the afternoon, combining rounds of 82 (+10) and 79 (+7) to finish the day in a tie for 29th place at 161 (+17).
Alexus Song (Auburn, Wash.) posted back-to-back rounds of 81 (+9) to close out the day in a tie for 32nd place at 162 (+18). Ellen Brantberg (Stockholm, Sweden) posted Seattle U’s best first round score at 76 (+4), but struggled in the second round with an 88 (+16) to drop into a tie for 34th place at 164 (+20).
As a team, Seattle U remained in sixth place throughout the day thanks to rounds of 315 (+27) and 307 (+19) for a 36-hole total of 622 (+46), but the Redhawks are still within striking distance of the teams above them in the standings. Sacramento State leads the team standings at 609 (+33), five strokes ahead of Santa Clara.
The third and final round of the Matador Invitational is scheduled to begin Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 7:00 a.m.
