After finishing in the top 15 last week at the Arizona Intercollegiate, sophomore Patrick Sato (Bellevue, Wash.) has been named both the Western Athletic Conference Male Golfer of the Week and the GoSeattleU.com Featured Student-Athlete of the Week.
Sato started the tournament slowly but recovered with three birdies and an eagle last Monday morning to post an opening-round score of even-par 71. He followed that with an afternoon score of 74 (+3), ending the first day of the tournament hosted by the University of Arizona in a tie for 23rd place at 145 (+3).
Sato remained Seattle U’s top player for the tournament after he posted a team-best round of three-under-par 68 last Tuesday, collecting six birdies against just three bogeys during the final round. Sato moved up the individual standings, ending up in a tie for 13th place at even-par 213, his best performance of the 2014-15 season.
So far this season, Sato has competed in five tournaments, earning the second-best stroke average on the team at 73.38. He has gotten off to a strong start in 2015, finishing in a tie for second place at the Redhawk-Bulldog Individual Classic two weeks ago with a two-round total of two-under-par 142.
In the classroom, Sato is a pre-major within the Albers School of Business and Economics, and he currently carries a 3.283 grade point average. He is the first Seattle U golfer to receive the conference’s weekly honor since Kyle Cornett was named WAC Golfer of the Week April 15, 2014.
The Seattle University men’s golf team returns to action Feb. 9-10 in Lakeside, Calif., for the Barona Collegiate Cup, hosted by San Diego State University at the Barona Creek Golf Club.
