Seattle U To Host Bakersfield in Single Game on Weekend: After completing their first weekend sweep last weekend with convincing wins over Chicago State and Kansas City, Seattle University women’s basketball hosts Bakersfield in a single game on the weekend. After a record number of games at home this season (including seven of eight home games during the month of December), the Redhawks will only play on their home floor twice during the month of February. Home Sweet Home: With a record-high 20 home games this season, SU is already through 16 games of their 2014-15 home schedule, completing 10 of 20 (including exhibitions) prior to the Christmas holiday. At the beginning of January, the Redhawks finished a stretch in which they played 11 of 12 on their home court (Nov. 29-Jan. 10).
Dads & Daughters/Cheer Day: On Saturday, Seattle U will welcome back an annual fan favorite in Eastside Dream Elite for a special halftime performance during the game. The Redhawks also welcome “Dads & Daughters” with a special ticket promotion by showing the graphic posted on Seattle U Athletics social media (above box). Dads and daughters who show the special graphic at the ticketing entrance will receive two tickets, two hot dogs, and two drinks for $10.
Scouting Bakersfield (14-6, 3-2 WAC): Bakersfield led the league standings through non-conference play and were picked to win the Western Athletic Conference title in 2014-15 in both the preseason coaches and media polls. On Jan. 22, Preseason WAC Player of the Year Tyonna Outland became Bakersfield’s all-time leading scorer (1,827 points going into this weekend). Batabe Zempare also recently broke CSUB’s career rebounding record (now with 703) on Jan. 17. SU and CSUB are currently tied for third in the league standings behind NM State (5-0 WAC) and UTPA (4-1 WAC). Last season, the ‘Runners won the meeting in Bakersfield (80-78 on Jan. 16) while the Redhawks won the meeting in Seattle (74-67 on Feb. 15). The Redhawks also ended the ‘Runners season in the WAC Tournament semis on Mar. 14, an 84-79 SU win.
Wilma Afunugo Named GoSeattleU.com Featured Student-Athlete of the Week (Jan. 19-25): Afunugo earned the honor after leading the team in scoring, averaging 13.0 ppg in a pair of wins vs. Chicago State and Kansas City. She also dished out a career high four assists on Jan. 24 vs. UMKC.
Record Breaking Performances: On Jan. 22, the Redhawks committed their fewest number of turnovers this season (11). On Jan. 24 vs. Kansas City, Renee Dillard-Brown pulled down a career high eight rebounds while Wilma Afunugo dished out a career-high four assists.
