Seattle University head softball coach Dan Powers announces the signing of three student-athletes to attend school and compete for the Redhawks beginning in 2015-16. Marcella Kay (San Jose, Calif.), Kaylee Ree (Gresham, Ore.), and Haley Wymbs (San Jose, Calif.) have signed National Letters of Intent (NLI’s) with Seattle University.

“I am very excited to announce our signing class,” said Powers. “All three of our signees can play multiple positions which will improve our depth and competition in the coming years. Each player represents our softball team’s Core Covenants very well and we are looking forward to each of them making their mark at Seattle University.”

Marcella Kay (San Jose, Calif.) – C/SS

Marcella Kay is a four year varsity starter for softball and four year varsity letterwinner for water polo at Valley Christian High School in San Jose, Calif. Through three years competing thus far, she has led both her softball and water polo teams to the playoffs all three years and was named 2014 Defensive Player of the Year. Among her other accolades, she was named Charlie Miguel Tournament MVP (2012), Second Team All-CCS (2012), West Catholic Coaches Award winner (2012), Scholar-Athlete (2012-14), CVHS Female Athlete of the Year (2013), First Team All-CCS (2014), First Team WCAL (2014), and San Jose Mercury News First Team (2014). In club play, she has competed with the South Bay Stars (2008-12), Lady Sharks (2013), and California Kryptonite (2014) and the Lady Sharks finished in fifth place in the 16U ASA Nationals in 2013. Outside of academics and athletics, she has played violin for 11 years, enjoys traveling, working out, being with friends, and riding horses. Kay will be a 2015 graduate of VCHS and has aspirations for a career in sports science.

Powers on Kay: Marcella Kay is an excellent athlete that will compete at catcher next season. She has the potential to play shortstop and outfield as well, which will improve our overall depth. The ball jumps off Marcella’s bat, so we are expecting big power numbers from her in the future.”

Kaylee Ree (Gresham, Ore.) – SS/3B

Kaylee Ree is a four-year varsity letterwinner for softball and volleyball and a two-year varsity letterwinner for basketball at Sam Barlow High School in Gresham, Ore. She was named Best Offensive Player for the past three years as well as Team MVP during her junior season during which she batted .500 and recorded 27 stolen bases. She led the Bruins to a seventh place finish for softball in 2014 and a fourth and seventh place finish for volleyball in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Individually, she is a two-time First Team All-League honoree for softball and three-time honoree for volleyball and was named First Team All-State for softball as a junior. She also enjoys being outdoors including hiking, finishing, boating, and spending time with family and friends. Ree, a Honor Roll member each semester since beginning her high school career, will graduate from SBHS in 2015.

Powers on Ree: Kaylee Ree is a true utility player having played shortstop, second base, third base and some outfield as well. She is a student of the game and has a very high softball IQ.  At the plate, Kaylee can use her speed for the short game but also sprays the ball well to all fields.”

Haley Wymbs (San Jose, Calif.) – OF

Haley Wymbs is a three-time varsity letterwinner, on target for a fourth season in 2015, from Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, Calif. She led the Monarchs to a 36-1 record in 2013-14 during which they won the WCAL championship as well as the Stampede Tournament championship. Individually, she received First Team All-League honors in 2012-13 and 2013-14. In club play, Wymbs was a four-time team captain, competing with the San Jose Lady Sharks during which the team finished fifth at 16U ASA Nationals in 2013. Academically, she is a three-time Principal’s Honor Roll honoree through three years completed and outside of school, she loves photography. Wymbs will graduate in 2015 from AMHS and has aspirations to be a neurosurgeon, therapist, or psychologist.

Powers on Wymbs: Haley Wymbs is a vocal leader in the outfield and a fierce competitor. She will be a triple threat with her speed and short game but also has some pop in her bat. I like the energy Haley brings every time she steps on the field.”
