After playing a significant role in Seattle University’s 70-58 victory over CSU Northridge last Saturday night, senior guard Jarell Flora (Bremerton, Wash.) has been named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week by both the league office and College Sports Madness, announced Monday morning by both organizations.

Flora shot 8-of-18 from the field, including 5-of-11 from behind the three-point line, and 2-of-2 from the free throw line to finish with a season-high 23 points. Flora also pulled down a career-high nine rebounds as the Redhawks won the rebounding battle over the Matadors, 40-30.

Flora’s key contribution came after CSUN cut an 11-point deficit down to one at 50-49 with 7:49 remaining in the second half. Over the next minute and a half, Flora hit back-to-back three-point baskets to extend the Redhawk lead back to seven, helping Seattle U close out its season-opening five-game homestand with its second victory of the season.

“I am pleased that Jarell has been recognized for his early season efforts. He has put in a lot of work to put himself in this position. He understands better than anyone that individual recognition is a sign of team success,” Seattle U head men’s basketball coach Cameron Dollar said.

Flora is currently seventh in the WAC in scoring and ninth in rebounding, averaging 14.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. He is also third in the league in three-pointers made per game, averaging 2.20 made three-pointers per contest. Earlier this season against Nebraska Omaha, Flora scored 20 points in the first half as he finished that game with 22 points and eight rebounds.

Seattle University, currently 2-3 this season, heads to Kent, Wash., for the fourth annual ShoWare College Showcase, taking on the Pacific Lutheran Lutes Monday night, Dec. 1, starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale through the ShoWare Center Box Office, costing $10 for general admission, $25 for a courtside seat, and $30 for a VIP experience which includes a reserved seat and a pregame dinner buffet.
