Seattle U Travels South to Close 2014 Regular Season: After sweeping their final home regular season weekend, Seattle U men’s soccer (10-5-1, 5-2-1 WAC), will face San Jose State and Bakersfield on the road to close the regular season. Their destiny in their hands, the Redhawks still have an opportunity to clinch at least a share of the regular season crown as well as a first round bye in next weekend’s WAC Tournament. As the Redhawks are currently tied for second in the league standings, a lot is still to be determined by this weekend’s slate of conference competition. Next weekend, Seattle U will return to their home city and will welcome the top six teams for the WAC men’s soccer tournament. Scouting San Jose State (6-8-2, 4-2-2 WAC): After being handed a 5-1 loss by Bakersfield in their first conference match of the season on the NSCAATV Game of the Week, the Spartans have gone 3-1-2 overall and 2-0-2 on the road in WAC play. Jonathan Colunga leads the WAC in assists, with eight in 15 games (0.53/gm.), ranking ninth in assists per game and 10th in total assists among NCAA DI leaders. With eight goals this season, Rory Knibbs and Greg Harte are tied for second in the WAC in goals, ranking 34th nationally. Last season, the Redhawks earned a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over the Spartans in the WAC tournament championship game on Nov. 17.
Scouting Bakersfield (9-6-2, 3-4-1 WAC): Last weekend, Bakersfield handed WAC-leader UNLV their second conference loss of the season (2-1 on Oct. 31), while tying Grand Canyon, 1-1, on Nov. 2. Last season, the Redhawks went 1-0-1 versus the Roadrunners during the regular season. Julian Zamora leads the team offensively with 10 goals and one assist for 21 points while, in goal, Nicolas Clever has started 16 of 17 matches and ranks third in WAC GAA (1.08), fourth in saves (61), and fourth in shutouts (4.1).
Best of the West: In the Nov. 4 edition of the NSCAA/Continental Tire Men’s Soccer West Regional rankings, five of the top 10 teams are members of the Western Athletic Conference. Seattle U regained the top spot in the regional rankings while UNLV (2nd), Utah Valley (7th), Air Force (9th), and Bakersfield (10th) round out the top 10.
